Doubling Testing Velocity for Dr.Squatch

"...having a very experienced and professional partner Dr.Squatch could lean on–validate thoughts we had or provide new points of view we didn’t consider. This gave us comfort in the decisions we were making."

Robbie Williams, Associate Director of Ecommerce

Dr. Squatch, a leading men's personal care brand, has always been deeply committed to data-driven decision-making, especially within their e-commerce operations. With a complex product offering and frequent content launches, they relied heavily on experimentation and A/B testing to validate every decision.

However, to truly scale their efforts and maintain their rapid pace, the brand recognized the need to elevate its experimentation program’s maturity and velocity. This led to a journey toward a strategic partner with deep expertise and capacity to keep pace with Dr. Squatch's dynamic business.

The Challenge

For Dr.Squatch, challenges weren't site-specific, but rather came from a desire to significantly enhance their experimentation capabilities.

Having worked with other agencies in the past, they realized they needed to "step up their level of maturity and velocity" in experimentation and "a bit more horsepower." The key challenges included:

  • Tool Transition. Dr. Squatch needed to switch experimentation tools and sought a strong recommendation from a top agency on the ideal tech stack and implementation.
  • Business Complexity. Dr. Squatch's business is highly complex, with numerous core products, diverse bundles, one-time and monthly subscription programs, and frequent customer acquisition offers. This intricate landscape demanded a highly mature and intelligent partner who could quickly grasp their operations and match their aggressive pace.

Internal Capacity: While Squatch had a dedicated experimentation team, their lean structure meant that tasks like user research consumed significant time from product designers, lowering their focus on core design roadmap execution. They needed a partner to augment their capacity and allow their internal team to focus on the most valuable use of their time.

The Solution

Speero stepped in as the strategic partner Squatch needed to overcome these challenges and accelerate its experimentation roadmap. The solution involved:

  • Strategic Tool Recommendation & Implementation: We recommended a new experimentation tool and actively partnered with Dr. Squatch on its seamless implementation, ensuring the right tech stack was in place to support increased velocity.
  • Expert Partnership & Validation: Speero offered an experienced and professional partnership, providing an external perspective to validate Squatch's internal thoughts and introduce new points of view that hadn't been considered. This collaborative approach instilled confidence in the decisions being made, moving beyond internal biases.

Capacity Augmentation & Process Optimization: By taking on significant user research and experimentation tasks, Speero effectively added "horsepower" to Squatch's lean internal team. This allowed Squatch's product designers and other team members to reorient their focus towards high-value design and development work, ensuring efficient use of internal resources. Speero's "dialed-in processes and communication vehicles” made it easy to integrate their work with Squatch's existing roadmaps.

The Results

We helped Dr. Squatch increase testing velocity, validate decisions more easily, and integrate a new tool into their stack:

  • Increased Experimentation Velocity. We increased the brand’s velocity from 2 to 5 tests a month.
  • Validated Decision-Making. Because it had a trusted partner with extensive experimentation experience, Dr.Squatch was able to lean in and get comfort in their strategic decisions.
  • Seamless Integration & Efficiency. Robbie Williams particularly praised Speero's process, toolsets, and communication vehicles, highlighting how easy it was to stay on track and merge the experimentation roadmap with other ongoing projects. This operational efficiency allowed Squatch to balance multiple initiatives effectively.

Key Takeaways

1

Strategic Partnerships Drive Maturity

Partnering with an experienced agency can significantly elevate an organization's experimentation maturity and velocity, especially when internal capacity is a constraint.

1

External Expertise Validates & Innovates

An external partner brings fresh perspectives and validates internal strategies, leading to more robust and unbiased decision-making in complex environments.

1

Process and Communication are Paramount

A well-defined process and clear communication channels are crucial for seamlessly integrating an agency's work with internal roadmaps, ensuring efficiency and alignment.
