Personalization opportunity
They filled in the quiz. Then the site forgot.
Use those answers on the next page and the next visit.
Step 1 · Signals
What do we know about this person?
Declared
Quiz answers, role, team size, use case, constraints.
Example eligibility rule
Apply the answers after the customer completes the quiz and all fields required for the treatment are present. Keep them active until the customer edits them or contradictory declared information appears. Do not personalize from an abandoned or partially completed quiz.
Step 2 · The need
What’s really going on?
A preference center, sizing quiz, ICP form, or "tell us about your team" survey captured a clear need. The next pages, and the next visit, still treat them as unknown.
Avoid this assumption
Collecting the data is not personalization. Using it on the next screen is.
Step 3 · Worth it?
Do the math before you build.
Declared data is usually one of the clearest signals available. Ignoring it teaches people that answering did not improve the experience.
Reach
How many eligible people can you reach in the chosen channel and time period?
Cost
What will content, delivery, QA and ongoing maintenance cost?
Return
What incremental outcome would cover that cost, and what is it worth?
Planning inputs, not measured results. Estimate reach × incremental outcome rate × value per outcome, then subtract cost. Use a range and a consistent time period.
Step 4 · The response
Pick how you help.
Example format: Recommendations
Homepage and email use the answers as the primary sort, with an edit path.
Compare lighter and deeper responses
Choose the lightest response that solves the need.
Assist: Offer useful help
Show a specific, editable recap: "You told us you're furnishing a small apartment, so compact sofas and storage beds appear first."
Adapt: Change a meaningful part
Homepage and email use the answers as the primary sort, with an edit path.
Transform: Tailor the journey
A first-run experience assembled from the answers, then a save into the profile.
What to watch out for
- Asking 12 questions to power one module.
- No edit or "this isn't me" control.
- Storing answers in a tool that the site cannot read.
Step 5 · The moment
Did it help? A/B test it.
Control
Generic post-form destination.
Treatment
Answer-aware destination and follow-up.
Success measure
Time-to-first-value after the form.
Guardrail
Form completion rate. If the follow-up feels like a trap, completions drop.
Win or lose, record what worked, for whom and why. What you learn becomes the next signal.
Tools that can deliver the response
- Customer.io Event-triggered lifecycle messaging across email, push, SMS, and in-app, built on a customer profile and behavior-data layer.
- Twilio Segment Unify Builds unified, real-time customer profiles from event and identity data (Unify), which other tools consume for activation.
- Optimizely Personalization Delivers real-time, audience-targeted experiences inside the same platform as Optimizely's A/B testing and feature-flagging tools, with audiences built from behavioral, CRM, and Optimizely Data Platform signals.
- Mutiny B2B website personalization tool that identifies visiting companies (via IP/firmographic match) and swaps page content (headlines, proof, CTAs) by account, segment, or industry. As of April 2026 it relaunched as an AI GTM agent, expanding beyond the original website-personalization product.
Try the framework on another situation
They said why they came. You showed the homepage. Show them that next, not everything.
You have their history. Next time still starts from scratch. Ask to save one useful default, when it would actually help.
Work through it in the hub
Score your personalization program, explore more customer situations, and compare the tools that can deliver them.
