Experimentation / CRO

Experimentation and Testing Programs acknowledge that the future is uncertain. These programs focus on getting better data to product and marketing teams to make better decisions.

Research & Strategy

We believe that research is an integral part of experimentation. Our research projects aim to identify optimization opportunities by uncovering what really matters to your website users and customers.

Data and Analytics

90% of the analytics setups we’ve seen are critically flawed. Our data analytics audit services give you the confidence to make better decisions with data you can trust.

Personalization opportunity

They hit the limit of the plan they're on.

Tell them they hit a wall, and how to keep going. Don't throw up a paywall.

Intervention
Expansion
SaaS, Marketplace

Step 1 · Signals

What do we know about this person?

Connected

Plan, usage vs cap, the action that just failed, account value.

Example eligibility rule

Trigger when a valid action is blocked because usage has reached 100% of a documented plan limit and no upgrade or temporary exception is already pending. Tailor the path to the exact limit hit, and show it only to users who can upgrade or request approval.

Step 2 · The need

What’s really going on?

Seats, messages, SKUs, storage, a feature gate. They hit it mid-job. Default is a paywall modal. The honest read: they were doing the job, then the product said no. Intervention is a path through, not a billboard.

Avoid this assumption

Blocking the job to force a credit card is not personalization. Naming the limit and a way through is.

Step 3 · Worth it?

Do the math before you build.

This is expansion with a conscience. They already proved the need. A clear next plan, a temporary lift, or a human, tested against the hard stop, beats a generic upgrade banner.

Reach

How many eligible people can you reach in the chosen channel and time period?

Cost

What will content, delivery, QA and ongoing maintenance cost?

Return

What incremental outcome would cover that cost, and what is it worth?

Planning inputs, not measured results. Estimate reach × incremental outcome rate × value per outcome, then subtract cost. Use a range and a consistent time period.

Step 4 · The response

Pick how you help.

Example format: Experience

A skippable lift (trial of the next tier, extra seats for 7 days) with a reason.

Compare lighter and deeper responses

Choose the lightest response that solves the need.

Assist: Offer useful help

Name the limit in-line. A link to compare plans. No modal.

Adapt: Change a meaningful part

A skippable lift (trial of the next tier, extra seats for 7 days) with a reason.

Transform: Tailor the journey

In-flow upgrade for the exact ceiling they hit, plus a human for high-fit accounts.

What to watch out for

  • A full-screen paywall on the first brush with the limit.
  • Recommending the most expensive plan by default.
  • No way to finish the job they were in.

Step 5 · The moment

Did it help? A/B test it.

Control

Default paywall or hard stop.

Treatment

Limit-aware path through, with a holdout.

Success measure

Expansion conversion of accounts that hit the cap.

Guardrail

Support tickets and reports of feeling trapped. A hard stop can increase upgrades while still damaging trust and task completion.

Win or lose, record what worked, for whom and why. What you learn becomes the next signal.

Tools that can deliver the response

  • Pendo in-app guides Product experience platform combining usage analytics with in-app guides targeted by user or account segments.
  • Customer.io Event-triggered lifecycle messaging across email, push, SMS, and in-app, built on a customer profile and behavior-data layer.
  • Iterable Cross-channel journeys (email, SMS, push, in-app) built from a single visual studio, triggered by real-time customer behavior.
  • Mutiny B2B website personalization tool that identifies visiting companies (via IP/firmographic match) and swaps page content (headlines, proof, CTAs) by account, segment, or industry. As of April 2026 it relaunched as an AI GTM agent, expanding beyond the original website-personalization product.

Try the framework on another situation

They keep doing it the hard way. Show the easier way while they're still doing it by hand.

They opened cancel. Ask what broke. Let cancel stay one tap.

They're considering more. The next plan still looks like a brochure. Show proof from how they already use it, not a feature list.

Work through it in the hub

Score your personalization program, explore more customer situations, and compare the tools that can deliver them.
