Research recipe
Validating a Redesign Before Build
The problem, in the customer's voice
What this recipe does
A big redesign is about to be built and the risk is shipping months of work that performs worse than what it replaces. This recipe front-loads the validation. A five second test checks whether the new design communicates its point at a glance, a preference test weighs it against the current version, and copy testing pressure-tests the words carrying the message. Prototype and moderated usability sessions then confirm people can actually complete the core tasks, so the redesign earns its place before a developer touches it.
The method sequence
Focus
Check the new design communicates its point, and pressure-test the words carrying it.
Validate
Weigh it against the current version, confirm people can complete the core tasks, then prove it live.
