Personalization opportunity
They've been reading. You still send them the blog index.
Give them the next piece of what they've been reading.
Step 1 · Signals
What do we know about this person?
Connected
Content topics, completion depth, recency, and any form fills across visits.
Example eligibility rule
Require at least three substantially consumed pieces on the same topic across two sessions in 30 days, or two pieces plus a related webinar or pricing view. Do not infer a lasting interest from one article.
Step 2 · The need
What’s really going on?
Three whitepapers, two webinars, a pricing glance. Next visit, the resource hub is alphabetical. You could assemble the next useful thing. You show a feed instead.
Avoid this assumption
A "recommended for you" widget of popular posts is not this. This is a reading path built from their actual path.
Step 3 · Worth it?
Do the math before you build.
B2B and media journeys are long. The gift is synthesis: "here's the thread you've been pulling".
Reach
How many eligible people can you reach in the chosen channel and time period?
Cost
What will content, delivery, QA and ongoing maintenance cost?
Return
What incremental outcome would cover that cost, and what is it worth?
Planning inputs, not measured results. Estimate reach × incremental outcome rate × value per outcome, then subtract cost. Use a range and a consistent time period.
Step 4 · The response
Pick how you help.
Example format: Sequence
A short path of 3 next pieces plus the matching product or plan.
Compare lighter and deeper responses
Choose the lightest response that solves the need.
Assist: Offer useful help
A "continue this topic" row on the next relevant page.
Adapt: Change a meaningful part
A short path of 3 next pieces plus the matching product or plan.
Transform: Tailor the journey
A living brief: what they have seen, what is missing, a human offer if the account is high-value.
What to watch out for
- Recommending the thing they just finished.
- Gating the next piece after they already earned trust.
- Sales outreach that recites their reading history back to them.
Step 5 · The moment
Did it help? A/B test it.
Control
Default resource hub or homepage modules.
Treatment
Path-aware next-best content.
Success measure
Content-assisted pipeline or subscriber conversion.
Guardrail
Time-on-site vanity. If they read more and buy less, you built a library, not a path.
Among visitors who met the topic-depth rule, compare the assembled path with the standard resource index. Measure progression to the next useful action, not total content views, and report results separately for anonymous and known visitors.
Win or lose, record what worked, for whom and why. What you learn becomes the next signal.
Tools that can deliver the response
- Customer.io Event-triggered lifecycle messaging across email, push, SMS, and in-app, built on a customer profile and behavior-data layer.
- Iterable Cross-channel journeys (email, SMS, push, in-app) built from a single visual studio, triggered by real-time customer behavior.
- Mutiny B2B website personalization tool that identifies visiting companies (via IP/firmographic match) and swaps page content (headlines, proof, CTAs) by account, segment, or industry. As of April 2026 it relaunched as an AI GTM agent, expanding beyond the original website-personalization product.
- Twilio Segment Unify Builds unified, real-time customer profiles from event and identity data (Unify), which other tools consume for activation.
Try the framework on another situation
They came back mid-search and had to start over. Put them back where they left off.
The ad made a promise the page doesn't keep. Keep that promise on the page they land on.
Work through it in the hub
Score your personalization program, explore more customer situations, and compare the tools that can deliver them.
