Research method
Brand Perception Survey
A structured survey run with a recruited panel that matches the target market, measuring unaided and aided brand awareness, brand preference, and the associations people hold against named competitors. Run before and after a brand change, the same instrument becomes a tracker. The baseline wave shows where perception stands, and later waves show whether it moved.
When to reach for it
Establish a brand baseline before a rebrand, relaunch or repositioning, then re-measure after it ships.
Find out whether the target market knows the brand exists, and what it is known for.
See how perception and preference compare against named competitors in the consideration set.
Track awareness and perception over time as a standing programme measure.
Strengths and limits
Pros
Recruited panels reach the people who don't know you, which the customer list never can, so awareness numbers stay honest.
Everything is measured against named competitors, so position is relative rather than absolute.
Repeatable. The same instrument re-run later gives a genuine before-and-after comparison.
Cons
Panel quality decides everything. A panel that doesn't match the real buying audience measures the wrong people's opinions.
Perception moves slowly, so waves need spacing before the deltas mean anything.
It says what the market thinks, not what to change. It needs qualitative methods alongside it to explain the numbers.
Practical considerations
Sampling
Survey the target market, not the customer base. Existing customers already know the brand, which inflates awareness and skews perception toward the product experience. Customers can be a separate, clearly labelled slice if their view is also wanted.
Consistency
The value of tracking comes from asking the same questions of the same profile every wave. Resist rewording between waves, because every change breaks the comparison.
Timing
Run the baseline before the brand change is announced, and leave enough time after launch for the market to notice before re-measuring.

A method earns its value when its signal corroborates others. Here is where this one does its work.
