The problem, in the customer's voice

Visitors can't find the right product or page
I know what I want but the menus don't match how I think, so I keep hunting.
How might we structure navigation around how customers actually look for things?

What this recipe does

Visitors know what they want but can't find it, so they bounce between pages or fall back on search and give up. Begin by reading the symptoms. Analytics surfaces the search terms and dead-end paths, and session recordings show the hunting behaviour in context. Then move to the structure itself, using card sorting to learn how customers expect content grouped and tree testing to check whether a proposed menu lets them find things. Validate the winning structure in usability sessions so you change the navigation on evidence rather than on internal logic.

The method sequence

Explore

Read the symptoms: search terms, dead-end paths, hunting behaviour.

Focus
